Mississippi River Distillery: Cody Road

When one hears talk of American bourbon or whiskey, Kentucky or Tennessee are usually what come to mind.  We recently learned of a few new spirits - ones that don't originate in those traditional southern states - that we felt we had to bring to our list.  Believe it or not, Iowa has entered the picture.

The Mississippi River Distilling Company located in LeClair, Iowa is fairly new to the industry.  They have introduced Cody Road Bourbon and Rye Whiskey, both a must try the next time you are in.

Cody Road Bourbon is named in honor of Buffalo Bill Cody. It is a craft distilled spirit that is made from local corn, wheat and barley crops in Iowa and nearby Illinois. It has touches of corn and light fruit from the wheat with a grassy nutty finish from the barley. Its smooth finish is enhanced by hints of vanilla and caramel.

Mississippi River Distillery could not stop with just a bourbon. Their Cody Road Rye Whiskey is handmade from 100% rye in Fulton, Illinois. Rye is known for being bold and spicy, and the distillery really brings forth these characteristics to create a spirit you will remember.

Next time you are in, try one of these spirits that has ties to our home state. These spirits have won numerous awards since their creation, including a Bronze Medal at the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The distillery, created in 2010 by two brothers with a passion for producing spirits, has introduced these new spirits in honor of an American legend that was born in the same town of the distillery. William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody was born in LeClair, Iowa back in the mid 1800's. He was an honorable soldier, bison hunter and show man that got his nickname after the Civil War when he had a contract to supply railroad workers with buffalo meat.

During his time, he became one of the most famous figures of the American Old West. In his later years, he organized cowboy themed shows for both education and entertainment, in which he toured around the world presenting. Mississippi River Distillery honors their local hero.
